Why Is It Important for a Chimney Service Company To Be Licensed & Insured?
Well, for a couple different reasons actually. While the first and most glaring might be because of the legal and liability issues, working with a company that is properly licensed and insured also ensures that you’re not getting taken for a ride. What do we mean by this, exactly? Unfortunately, the chimney and venting industry is one that is not officially regulated by any agencies and/or organizations.
This means that as long as one has access to a tall ladder and specialized tools, they can work out of a truck and call themselves a company…despite never once actually learning about the ins and outs of chimneys or other venting systems and how exactly they work. This, of course, is not an ideal situation to find yourself in: a stranger in your home who actually has no idea what they’re doing. It’s why we’re so adamant in emphasizing the importance of looking for certain credentials – namely ones from the Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA) .
The CSIA has been a leader in this industry since the early 1980s, and aims to not only properly and adequately train technicians, but also provide a plethora of resources for homeowners to learn more about safe appliance operation and maintenance.
Care to learn more about the industry and the importance of different credentials? As always, we’d love to address your concerns and curiosities and answer your questions…all you have to do is contact us! Is There a Preferred Time of Year To Schedule Fireplace & Chimney Services?
There is, yes. Ideally, you’d want to look at scheduling your preventive maintenance services (such as annual chimney sweeps and inspections) before the start of a burning season, so some time during the spring or early summer.
Maintaining a safe and suitable fireplace or stove appliance requires a good deal of proactive action to ensure that operation is as safe and seamless as possible. And because the beginning of fall marks the start of cooler weather and the time to transition to all things warm and cozy, it’s best to have already gotten your fireplace and chimney checked over and brushed out ahead of time –it’ll mean that much more time spent enjoying your appliance.
Not to mention that fall and winter are a chimney sweep company’s craziest time of year. It makes sense – these are the months when everyone starts using their hearths and finding any issues or minor inefficiencies that may have developed over the dormant season.
Here at Ashbusters, we hate turning customers away to search for a lower-rated company that might have openings, so we like to prepare Seabrook Island homeowners and encourage them to get these maintenance services out of the way well before they plan to operate their fireplaces and stoves each year.
However, just like anything else in life, sometimes other things get in the way and cause various home tasks to fall to the wayside. We’ve all been there. While spring and summer are certainly the preferred times to get chimney inspections, cleanings, and any other routine maintenance stuff out of the way, if you need to schedule a chimney sweep service at any other point in the year, we’ll do our best to squeeze you in where we can.
What Causes Chimney Damage? Is It Preventable?
Somewhat surprisingly, of all the ways a chimney can get damaged, one of the most common and destructive is prolonged contact with water. Yes, you heard that right: H2O is your chimney’s number one nemesis – especially if it’s made of brick.
And why is that, exactly? Well, aside from the fact that water is both relentless and persistent, finding its way into just about any untreated material if given enough time, brick is a highly porous material. So, for as strong, durable, and long-lasting as brickwork may be, even the almighty brick can fall prey to the effects of permeation.
Over time, brick that has not been weather-proofed properly will absorb large quantities of water and retain it – in fact, one single brick can hold up to a cup and a half of water! And, while it doesn’t tend to drop below freezing here on Seabrook Island, on the rare occurrences where it does, any water that is trapped in your bricks will freeze, too, causing the material to flake and crumble where the ice forced its way through.
Water is equally as dangerous to the vulnerable inner parts of your chimney system, too. Components such as flashing, the chimney crown, the cap, and others work to create an effective seal between the home and chimney and the chimney and the outdoor environment. But, when these parts begin to deteriorate or become damaged, your flue may then be exposed to water, external debris and other materials, and animal entry. All of these can do a number on your structure and greatly affect the health and condition of your entire appliance as well.
That’s why it’s super important to create a routine service schedule and stick to it. Regular chimney cleanings and inspections ensure that all is as it should be, so when you go to light a fire, you can actually enjoy it instead of worrying about all that could potentially be out of place or damaged.
Are There Any DIY Chimney Repairs Or Projects I Can Do Myself?
We love a good DIY project as much as the next person, but due to the complicated nature of stoves, fireplaces, and chimneys, we cannot condone chimney-related ventures. HGTV and YouTube may seem like great teachers, but considering the innate danger of working in and around an appliance designed to produce and host actual live flames inside of your home, these resources don’t replace actual training and safely supervised experience.
So, no matter if you’re looking to save a few bucks by completing a repair by yourself, or perhaps thought you might try your hand at painting or refacing your hearth, we urge you to first contact a team of professionals.
When you work with Ashbusters Chimney Service, you don’t have to sacrifice your vision or involvement in the process! We pride ourselves on our ability to prioritize your thoughts and ideas, while ensuring that we are the ones doing the dirty work – the perfect recipe for safe and sustainable home improvements.
