How do you know your dryer vents are dirty?

You should always have your vents cleaned an inspected every year.  However, if you feel something is wrong you should always call and have someone check on the problem.  Since lint is an extremely easy to heat up, it is extremely flammable.  If you have to run multiple cycles to dry your laundry, one of the two vents is probably blocked, either the back or the easily accessible one that is cleaned every few uses.  Many other things such as squirrel and bird’s nests, and beehives can block a vent.  To learn more about dryer safety tips from the Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA) click here.

How are the vents cleaned?

It is important that you have your laundry area cleaned for when the technicians arrive.  They will need to move your dryer away from the wall to scrub the inside of the vent tube.  They will then attach a vacuum that goes through the vent to the outside of your home.  After they are finish all they have to do is pick up the leftover debris and move the dryer back into place.

What do you do if a fire breaks out?

You should always have a plan ready incase a fire does happen to break out in your home.  Make sure that the home has the right number of smoke detectors on every floor.  To add additional safety, you can add some sprinklers.  When planning the escape routes, make sure that you have two exits form every room incase one is clocked and that any people in the home that need extra assistance will have it.  It is recommended that you practice drills to make sure that the plan does not nee to be altered.

Bottom line: having your dryer vents cleaned and practicing basic fire safety can increase the longevity and performance of your appliance and reduce the risk for a house fire. Lets get started.
